Watch Dr. Jones undergo his 5th Platelet Rich Plasma Treatment.
About 50 million men and 30 million women in the United States have male or female pattern baldness or thinning in some form. Hair loss can occur at any adult age but is most common after the age of 50.
PRP Injections are a popular and effective hair restoration method.
Of course, there are many hair loss solutions on the market. Platelet-Rich Plasma therapy has often been used over the last decade by professional athletes to help repair and enhance injured joints, and it could help to restore your lost hair, too. High concentrations of platelets in plasma cells help promote hair growth by prolonging the growing phase of the hair cycle.
During the treatment, a technician draws your blood and will then spin it in a centrifuge. This will separate the platelets and plasma. Your doctor will then inject the plasma into your scalp, which helps repair blood vessels, promote cell growth and wound healing, and stimulate collagen production.
Of course, the area where the PRP will be injected is the area where your hair loss has occurred. For the most part, injections are administered once per month, for three months, and then spread out over about three or four months for up to two years. Everyone’s hair loss is different therefore treatment timelines vary. The injection schedule will depend on your genetics, pattern and amount of hair loss, age and hormones.
In a 2014 study, researchers in India looked at men with male-pattern baldness who used over the counter medications, but saw little change in their hair growth. After four PRP treatments, they had about 30 percent more growth in thinning areas.
A 2017 study completed in Italy also found male patients had experienced increased growth and density in areas where doctors used PRP therapy treatments. It can take roughly three months to begin to see an improvement. After that time, most patients – both male and female – often see tremendous regrowth of the hair they’ve lost.
