How do hair transplants work?

A hair transplant is quite a simple procedure in principle. Hair is taken from one part of the patient’s head (usually the back of the head; sometimes the sides too) and transplanted to the areas that are thinning.

The hair can be extracted either individually (known as FUE) or by cutting a strip from the back of the patient’s head (known as FUT). Both methods are effective and yield high-quality hair that looks and feels completely natural.

In order for the results to look natural, great care must be taken when placing the new hair in the thinning areas. This is why it’s so important to get a hair transplant done by a surgeon with a lot of experience and a high degree of skill.

Hair transplants typically take several hours and are performed under local anaesthetic.

They can be performed in one session although multiple sessions may be needed depending on the number of grafts required and the method chosen.

Is a hair transplant the best solution for hair loss?

Generally speaking, a hair transplant provides the most reliable and permanent results for hair loss. However the best time to get a hair transplant isn’t when you first notice your hair thinning. The reason being is that there’s a good chance you’ll be able to keep the hair you’ve got and prevent further loss by taking hair loss treatments, such as finasteride and minoxidil.

If you’ve been taking hair loss treatments for a number of years and feel that your hair loss has plateaued then a hair transplant provides an excellent means to get back the hair you have lost.
