At the Toronto Hair Transplant Surgeons, we see a lot of patients who are excited and confident about the results they’ll achieve with their hair transplant surgery and PRP procedures. Understandably though, there are others who come in a bit nervous about the procedure itself. They might ask: “Is a hair transplant painful?” or “How painful is PRP?”. We’ve been safely providing hair transplant surgery for more than 20 years and nothing is more important to us than the comfort of our patients. We’re constantly searching for ways to make the hair transplant experience as comfortable and enjoyable as possible.  In some cases, this could mean a heated blanket we provide to you if you’re feeling cold, the movement breaks to stretch your muscles, or the large screen TVs in all our operating rooms so you can binge the latest hit TV show (entertain and distract). It also means reassuring you that you’ll have minimal to no discomfort during your procedure, even though you’ll be awake.

How do we do this?

We’re proud to offer the Pro-Nox anxiety and pain control system, one of the most advanced comfort measures available for hair transplant surgery and PRP procedures available today.

What is Pro-Nox?

Pro-Nox is a system that delivers an inhaled mixture of nitrous oxide and oxygen. This mixture is highly effective at calming your nerves and lessening the discomfort of brief periods of your surgery or procedure. You might already even know this mixture as “laughing gas”, long used by dentists and other surgeons to help manage the anxiety and discomfort associated with surgical procedures.

How is Pro-Nox used?

Most parts of a hair transplant surgery are actually quite comfortable. Pain is targeted and eliminated by using a strong, long-lasting anaesthetic agent to numb the surgical areas. For some people, though, getting there can be a little nerve-wracking and uncomfortable. That’s where Pro-Nox comes in. Using a sterile mouthpiece, the Pro-Nox system allows you to inhale a safe, effective nitrous oxide mixture that provides a sense of calm, ease and comfort during the most nerve-wracking parts of your procedure. The one-way valve system only delivers the nitrous oxide gas when you breathe in, so you (the patient) are in control of how much you get. The Pro-Nox takes effect in just a few short moments, and before you know it, the durable and long-lasting effect of your local anesthesia will have taken hold.

What are the benefits of Pro-Nox?

Pro-Nox allows patients to control their own level of pain relief by inhaling as needed.

The effects of Pro-Nox wear off quickly following the procedure, so patients can return to their normal activities within just a few minutes, including driving home.

  • Pro-Nox is Health Canada approved.
  • Decreases or eliminates pain.
  • Decreases or eliminates anxiety.
  • Fast-acting; the effect is virtually immediate.
  • Completely safe.
  • Non-narcotic.
  • There are no needles or injections.
  • There is no chance of addiction.

Is Pro-Nox safe?

Absolutely. Nitrous oxide for pain control has been used safely for over a century, and is still widely used today. In fact, it is so safe that it is one of the most common pain control options used by pregnant women in labour.

A small number of people feel an unsettling sensation of being dizzy, lightheaded, or nauseous, but this is uncommon and the sensation goes away quickly. People with some serious lung diseases, such as COPD or cystic fibrosis, may not be eligible for Pro-Nox.

How long will the effects of Pro-Nox last?

That’s one of the best advantages of Pro-Nox! While Pro-Nox works almost instantly, it also leaves your body just as quickly. Within no more than 10 minutes, all the nitrous oxide you’ve inhaled has left your body, and you’ll feel like your normal self. This means you can even drive yourself home!

How much does Pro-Nox cost?

We’re proud to offer Pro-Nox anxiety and pain control at no charge for all our hair transplant surgery patients! At Toronto Hair Transplant Surgeons, there’s nothing more important to us than your safety and comfort. For PRP procedures, a small comfort fee may apply.
