Patient Story: Reclaiming Confidence After Traction Alopecia

Meet our beautiful patient, a 39-year-old Black woman who came to our hair transplant clinic after years of struggling with the effects of traction alopecia — a form of hair loss caused by prolonged tension on the hair follicles from tightly braided hairstyles. Over time, she watched her hairline recede and the sides of her scalp thin, leaving her feeling self-conscious and frustrated with limited styling options.

When she visited us, she had a clear goal: she wanted a natural, permanent hairline restoration that would let her wear her hair with confidence, including the ability to maintain a clean fade on the sides. She also didn’t want to shave the back of her scalp for surgery, which ruled out approaches such as FUE surgery.

We created a personalized treatment plan tailored to her needs, performing a limited FUT (strip) hair transplant to rebuild her frontal hairline and fill in the temporal areas. This approach allowed us to avoid shaving her donor area while still harvesting high-quality grafts. Since her hair loss was due to traction alopecia — and not genetic or progressive — she didn’t need adjunctive treatments like PRP, minoxidil, or laser cap therapy.

At her one-year follow-up, the transformation was truly inspiring. Her restored hairline looked effortless, natural, and blended beautifullywith her existing hair. Best of all, she regained the freedom to style her hair the way she loves, and she told us she felt like herself again.
