Simple Science Behind Hair Loss Treatment.

Instant Hair Thickening Fibers

When it comes to hair loss, every guy wants to know exactly which products work and which don’t . They are so many scams out there that it can be a minefield, particularly if you’re new to the subject.

Luckily, there are products now available on the market that are proven to be effective for hair loss. These products fall into two categories – medications, and concealers. Let’s look at medications first.

Hair loss medications

  • Finasteride – Finasteride (aka Propecia) is available via prescription and is an FDA approved medication for treating hair loss in men. It works by blocking the synthesis of dihydrotestosterone (DHT) in the body. DHT is the main cause of male pattern balding and causes the hair follicles to shrink and eventually die. By blocking its production in the body, it’s possible to slow down, or in some cases reverse the effects of balding. It’s worth pointing out that finasteride does cause side effects in some men.
  • Minoxidil – Minoxidil (aka Rogaine) is the other main treatment available on the market for hair loss. It works differently to finasteride in that it doesn’t block the production of DHT but instead dilates the blood vessels in the head, allowing for unrestricted hair growth. The results of minoxidil vary from one person to the next. Some men experience a lot of regrowth while for others there’s no noticeable difference. Minoxidil is available as either a liquid or foam and is applied to the scalp directly. It should be used at least once a day for 3 months before assessing its effectiveness.
  • Ketoconazole – Ketoconazole is a drug that’s most often found in shampoos. It works by reducing the amount of inflammation in the scalp and is often used in anti-dandruff shampoos such as Nizoral. Although ketoconazole isn’t an FDA approved treatment for hair loss, it is considered to be one of the 3 major treatments for hair loss that are actually effective and many men use a ketoconazole shampoo as part of their daily regimen.

Concealers

Concealing products are the other type of effective hair loss product on the market. It’s worth pointing out that unlike finasteride and minoxidil, concealing products do not tackle the underlying causes of hair loss but instead provide a way to cover up thinning parts of your scalp with natural looking hair fibres.

There are many different brands of hair fibres available on the market and they come in a range of colours so you can choose one that best suits your natural hair colour. Whilst not everyone is a fan of hair fibres, they’re a very viable and inexpensive alternative to wearing a hair piece.
